COMPARATIVE ANATOMICAL CLASSIFICATION OF CEREVBELLUM, THEIR PRINCIPAL CONNECTIONS AND CEREBELLAR SYMPTOMS

Abstract

|
In spite of numerous anatomical and physiological studies devoted to the cerebellum, we do not yet properly understand its function and its co-ordination with other parts of the brain.
Here, comparative anatomical aspects including intracerebellar nuclei, the corticonuclear projections, and the longitudinal zonal subdivision of the cerebellum which is valuable as a basis for the understanding of cerebellar function are briefly reviewed.
Furthermore, the major afferent and efferent cerebellar connections and the somatotopical localization within the cerebellum are discussed.
The function of the cerebellum as elucidated from experimental studies and its relationship to cerebellar affection in man are considered and emphasis is made on several reasons that the pure cerebellar syndromes, as they have been defined experimentally in animals, will not be very frequently encountered in man.
